This outstanding DVD features live American TV footage of John Coltrane (backed by McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Elvin Jones); Sonny Rollins (with Jim Hall, Bob Cranshaw, Ben Riley) & B.B.King and his band.
Vintage jazz performances from two of the most important players of the 60s -- oddly matched here with a BB King session! First up is a stunning performance by John Coltrane's classic quartet of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones -- first broadcast on American TV on December 7, 1963, and featuring versions of "Afro Blue", "Impressions", and "Alabama". Next are 3 equally great tunes from Sonny Rollins' quartet with Jim Hall -- featuring readings of "The Bridge", "God Bless The Child", and "If Ever I Would Leave You" -- first broadcast on March 23, 1962. Last up is a 1968 performance by BB King, recorded at the height of his popularity, and working with a quintet that includes tenor and organ -- on titles that include "That's Wrong Lil Mama", "Darling You Know I Love You", and "Think I'll Move To The Jungle". |
