Jazz / Hard Bop
Recorded: Apr 18, 1957, Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey
Today Tommy Flanagan is one of the most highly valued pianists in jazz. Back in the Fifties his appearances on record were primarily as a sideman, well-appreciated by his fellow musicians and the cognoscenti but not recognized for their display of his superior abilities by a wider audience. The fact that this album contained a Flanagan trio track, "How Long Has This Been Going On?," was greeted with glee by the inner circle. Then, too, since Coltrane, Burrell, and Idrees Sulieman were such choice, empathic soloists, it was a delight to hear them interact with Tommy and the all-Detroit rhythm section of Doug Watkins and Louis Hayes. All the originals are from the pen of Flanagan. Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler.
