Steven van Zandt has had a multifaceted musical career. After performing in his very first band, "The Source", he met and joined forces with Bruce Springsteen. From the very beginning he left his musical footprint on the "E-Street Band". Along with Southside Johnny he founded the "Asbury Jukes" and became their songwriter and producer.
By the beginning of the 1980's he had made considerable strides with both bands, but the idea of a solo-project began stirring inside him. A new stage name was needed. Little Steven was born.
The Disciplies Of Soul is a reference to the Motown era of the 1960's. The musical concept of the first album "Men Without Women" (1982) is Rhythm & Blues based.
The band's performance at Grugahalle Essen, opening the Rockpalast Night on October 16th 1982, was their trial by fire; up to then they had only played ONE public concert. But they came, they played and they conquered!
The concert on the Loreley on 25th August 1984 couldn't have been more different, presenting songs from the band's second album "Voice of America". More rock. Influences from "Ramones-Punk" ("Voice of America") and Reggae ("Solidarity"). The lyrics were steeped in politics: "Los Desaparecidos" describes the terror of the Chilean death squads.
