The Captain And Me, the band's third Warner Bros. album, demonstrated that their initial popularity was no fluke. The LP continued in the sonic direction established on the Toulouse Street, their previous release, matching celebratory rockers with moodier accoustic numbers and introspective ballads. Producer Ted Templeman helped the Doobies with new arrangement touches, including the use of strings and synthesizers. Steely Dan guitarist (and future Doobies member) Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and Little Feat keyboardist Billy Payne put in apperances as key sidemen as well.
