"We've had a fabulous Cropredy '98 and have had the added bonus of being filmed by AMITY. It's been years since there's been a Fairport video available, and we feel that this one really captures the unique atmosphere of the Cropredy Festival - and also the spirit of Fairport Convention on our home turf. Beyond the Ledge is a good DVD companion to Sanctuary's triple-CD Cropedy Box, videotaped at the festival the following year and capturing the essence of the festival and the then-current Fairport Convention's appeal. How one feels about this highly amplified and rock-oriented version of the group, whose repertory encompasses pieces like "Cosmic Intermezzo" alongside "Who Knows Where the Time Goes," "John Gaudie," and "Matty Groves," and has room for Ian Anderson's "Life Is a Long Song". It may almost be too wide a repertory for some to appreciate, but not quite -- this is the outer limit of the group's evolution, captured in widely varying but usually very satisfying camera angles. The visuals are actually superior to the audio as reproduced here, which is mastered at too low a volume and requires a serious boost to get to the level that represents the group's sound. Each of the 20 songs gets a chapter marker, and the video is mastered in full-frame (1.33-to-1).
