This is one of the more unusual CDs to come out on the Challenge label. Jasper van't Hof was heard improvising on a church organ during a radio broadcast, which resulted in this CD. Drummer Joey Baron's contributions were overdubbed during a later session. For those who grew up listening to pipe organs, such as this lovely centuries-old Italian instrument, these impromptu performances will reveal new possibilities; those used to the often dull ham-handed recordings by many Hammond organists may experience culture shock. "The Ultimate" has a meditative quality, while the chaotic nature of "No Pray" suggests someone attempting to escape demons. "Les Deux" almost has a calliope-like cadence as the organist softly sings to himself in the background. The slow development and screeching sustained notes of "Helium Speech," complete with annoying overdubbed sounds of pouring water, is probably the least successful track. Baron composed only one number, the brief introduction "One O Four." Listening to this CD requires patience and attention to the range of sounds that Jasper van't Hof produces in this very intriguing collection of improvisations. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Jasper van't Hof

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jun 30, 1947 in Enschede, Netherlands
Genre: Jazz

Over the years, jazz pianist Jasper van't Hof has issued solo recordings in addition to working with ensembles. Born on June 30, 1947, in Enschede, Netherlands, van't Hof was born into a musically minded family, as his father was a professional trumpet player and his mother a classical singer, leading to the youngster taking piano lessons from the age of five. By his teenage years, van't Hof knew that he wanted to pursue a career in music, playing in jazz bands in school, and by the age of 19 was playing at jazz festivals with such jazz notables as Pierre Courbois and Toto Blanke (it was while with Blanke that van't Hof co-founded a group called Association P.C.). During the '70s, van't Hof founded another outfit, Pork Pie, teaming up with Philip Catherine (guitar), Charlie Mariano (saxophone), Aldo Romano (drums), and J.F. Jennie Clarke (bass). Other bands that van't Hof contributed to soon followed, including Eyeball (which included sax player Bob Malach), Netherlands Quartet, and Pili Pili. Some solo titles that van't Hof has issued throughout the years include Solo Piano, Face to Face, and Un Incontro Illusorio, among others.
