Hank Jones, born in 1918 in Pontiac, U.S.A., eldest of three noted jazz brothers - Thad and Elvin Jones are the other two - has worked with almost all the major jazz figureheads of the past forty years, including Coleman Hawkins, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson and Lester Young.

His style might be described as basically mainstream-modern, with influences of Art Tatum, Teddy Wilson, Al Haig and Bud Powell. There are a lot of reasons for his popularity as a pianist: a wholly distinctive touch, delicate and yet firm; his beautifully understated invention and constant rhythmic approach as soloist and his sensitivity as accompanist.
He has a unique brand of rare all-round musicianship that is without equal. He has worked with singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billy Eckstine. With his rare ability to operate within almost any given jazz frame-work, he made numerous Jazz At The Philharmonic concert tours. He made an extraordinary number of recordings as a sideman and under his own name. In the sixties he performed and recorded with Benny Goodman, Oliver Nelson and the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. In the seventies in a period of five years he recorded fifteen albums under his own name with 'The Great Jazz Trio', including the Live At The Village Vanguard sessions with Ron Carter and Tony Williams. The present album once again features his keyboard artistry in every respect.

Mads Vinding, born in Copenhagen, Danmark, 1948, started bass-playing
when he was eleven years old and was a professional at the age of sixteen. He played in all countries of Europe and made concert tours in Japan and South America. He performed and recorded with pianists like Herbie Hancock, Joanne Brackeen, Roland Hanna, Monty Alexander and Dollar Brand; with drummers like Tony Williams; with saxophone players like Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Wayne Shorter and Sonny Stitt and with trumpet players like Dizzy Gillespie and dark Terry.
In 1978 he was awarded the first prize as the best soloist in the international radio contest Nordring and received the Ben Webster-prize in 1982. He works mostly free-lance, but is also a steady member of many groups like the Danish Radio Big Band and the Kenny Drew Trio.

Billy Hart, born in 1940, taught himself to play drums. His first professional engagement was with singer Shirley Horn, with whom he played for three years. He played with Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Eddy Harris, Pharoa Sanders, Marian McPartland and Herbie Hancock, with whom he remained for three years. Then he spent a year with the McCoy Tyner Trio, before joining Stan Getz. He also performed and recorded with many other leading figures in modern jazz, including Mile: Davis, Lee Konitz, Chico Freeman, James Newton and dark Terry. He was part of the group Quest with David Liebman, Richard Beirach and Ron McClure. Hart's influences were Louis Hayes, Max Roach, Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones.
He is widely regarded as one of the most capable of modern-jazz drummers, he is equally at home in electronic styles, in free jazz and in bop. He won the Down Beat critic poll in 1974.

Hank Jones

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jul 31, 1918 in Vicksburg, MS
Genre: Jazz

The oldest of the three illustrious Jones brothers (which include Thad and Elvin), Hank Jones was also the first of the great Detroit pianists (including Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris and Roland Hanna) to emerge after World War II although by then he had long since left town. Jones played in territory bands while a teenager and in 1944 he moved to New York to play with Hot Lips Page. He had stints with John Kirby, Howard McGhee, Coleman Hawkins, Andy Kirk and Billy Eckstine. Influenced by Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum, Jones' style was also open to bebop and his accessible playing was flexible enough to fit into many genres. He was on several Jazz at the Philharmonic tours (starting in 1947), worked as accompanist for Ella Fitzgerald (1948-53) and recorded with Charlie Parker. In the 1950s Jones performed with Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Cannonball Adderley and many others. He was on the staff of CBS during 1959-1976 but always remained active in jazz. In the late '70s Jones was the pianist in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin' and he recorded with a pickup unit dubbed the Great Jazz Trio which at various times includes Ron Carter, Buster Williams or Eddie Gomez on bass and Tony Williams, Al Foster or Jimmy Cobb on drums. Among the many labels that Hank Jones has recorded for as a leader are Verve, Savoy, Epic, Golden Crest, Capitol, Argo, ABC-Paramount, Impulse, Concord, East Wind, Muse, Galaxy, Black & Blue, MPS, Inner City and Chiaroscuro.
