This release offers one of the best LPs recorded by this great mainstream jazz trumpeter and cornetist Ruby Braff in the beginning of his fertile musical career, featuring Coleman Hawkins, Lawrence Brown, Ernie Caceres, Don Elliott, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green, Dave McKenna, Steve Jordan, and others.
On these dates Braff exhibits commendable controlled power, even at moments of climax.
Whatever the mood, in this kind of basically mainstream company his playing maintained an impressive sense of logicality and lyricism, as such as more than ample Proof of his innate ability to swing.
As bonus tracks, the CD concludes with the four tracks originally issued in one Extended Play record published under the name of the "Ruby Braff All-Stars."

This reissue LP from 1989 in CBS's short-lived Portrait series features the great trumpeter Ruby Braff playing with three very different but equally swinging groups. Four of the best performances, including "Stardust" and "It's Been So Long," showcase Braff with a rhythm section that includes pianist Dave McKenna. Braff also meets up with tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, baritonist Ernie Caceres, and trombonist Lawrence Brown in an all-star nonet, and with vibraphonist Don Elliott in a sextet. The emphasis is on veteran swing standards (Braff does contribute the original "Here's Freddie") and jamming ensembles. [This edition contains bonus tracks.] ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Ruby Braff

Active Decades: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Mar 16, 1927 in Boston, MA
Died: Feb 09, 2003 in Chatham, MA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Swing, New Orleans Jazz, Mainstream Jazz, Standards, Dixieland Revival

One of the great swingDixieland cornetists, Ruby Braff went through long periods of his career unable to find work because his music was considered out-of-fashion, but his fortunes improved by the 1970s. A very expressive player who in later years liked to build his solos up to a low note, Braff's playing was instantly recognizable within seconds.
Braff mostly worked around Boston in the late '40s. He teamed up with Pee Wee Russell when the clarinetist was making a comeback (they recorded live for Savoy), and after moving to New York in 1953, he fit easily into a variety of Dixieland and mainstream settings. Braff recorded for Vanguard as a leader, and with Vic Dickenson, Buck Clayton, and Urbie Green. He was one of the stars of Buck Clayton's Columbia jam sessions, and in the mid-'50s worked with Benny Goodman. But, despite good reviews and occasional recordings, work was hard for Braff to come by at times. In the 1960s, he was able to get jobs by being with George Wein's Newport All-Stars and at jazz festivals, but it was not until the cornetist formed a quartet with guitarist George Barnes, in 1973, that he became more secure. Afterward, Braff was heard in many small-group settings, including duets with Dick Hyman and Ellis Larkins (he had first met up with the latter in the 1950s), quintets with Scott Hamilton, and matching wits with Howard Alden. He remained one of the greats of mainstream jazz until his death in 2003.
