Saxophonist Yasuaki Shimizu teams with electronica artist David Cunningham on ONE HUNDRED, a live, improvisational date recorded in Tokyo in 2004. With Shimizu adding piano and delay pedals alongside his restlessly experimental horn work, and Cunningham playing guitar, percussion, and effects, these eight tracks are nervous yet strangely lyrical and atmospheric. The duo delve into tone-based trance, but vary their approach with rhythmic complexity and surprising textures. ONE HUNDRED comes recommended to fans of intimate, experimental jazz that shares characteristics with ambient and chamber music. |
