Although the personnel and instrumentation change from song to song, bassist Tom Knific's Siena is very much an intimate affair. The opener, a trio rendition of "If I Should Lose You" with pianist Fred Hersch and drummer Tim Froncek, is the hottest performance on the set. Sunny Wilkinson takes a haunting vocal on "Estate" (with guitarist Gene Bertoncini and Knific) and duets with the leader on "You Don't Know What Love Is." The trio of Knific, guitarist John Abercrombie and pianist Andy LaVerne are featured in lyrical form on "Siena" and "A Nice Idea." In addition, the cool-toned tenor of Billy Drewes is heard on "Dark Angel," pianist Fred Hersch is featured on "The Baron," Knific duets with Bertoncini on the boppish "Que Cosa," and the closing "A Portrait of Thad" has violinist Renata Artman Knific playing mournfully in the lead with pianist Sir Roland Hanna very much in a supportive role. This set would have benefited by the inclusion of a couple up-tempo tunes so there would be a little more heat to balance out the soothing pieces. But overall it makes for an enjoyable listen. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
