Gilad Atzmon and The Orient House Ensemble features Gilad Atzmon on soprano sax, clarinet and sol, Frank Harrison on piano and melodica, Asaf Sirkis on drums and bandir and Oli Hayhurst on double bass.

Raised as a secular Israeli Jew in Jerusalem, Gilad Atzmon witnessed and empathised with the daily sufferings of Palestinians and spent 20 years trying to resolve for himself the tensions of his background. Finally disillusioned, he moved away from Israel and went to England to study philosophy. Yet since his arrival in London, Atzmon has become known primarily as a pop producer and powerful hardcore bebop blower on the alto and tenor saxes. Mainly inspired by jazz giants like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Atzmon performs a lot with his jazz trio and quartet but also collaborates with non-jazz acts such as Ian Dury's Blockheads.

When he started working with Asaf Sirkis, a drummer from his homeland, Atzmon recovered an interest in playing the music of the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe that had been in the back of his mind for years. Adding two young Cambridge musicians to the band, he founded the Orient House Ensemble whose music infuses post-bop jazz with Ladino and Balkan melodies, Jewish klezmer and Turkish influences and produces haunting and powerful moods. In the UK where it was released earlier this year, the album met with highest critical acclaim. "The vitality and character of Atzmon's own playing, as well as the freshness of his group's approach, reveals the vast majority of jazz-world-ethnic musical mixes as mere pastiche, lacking any real originality" (Jazzwise, **** [outstanding]). "An album swirling with varied influences... unusual and beautiful" (Metro, ****). "This marvelous Israeli musician (...) surpasses himself. Playing soprano saxophone and ethnic instruments, he creates his own cross cultural idiom" (The Observer).

Incorporating post-bop jazz tunes by Miles Davis and Wayne Shorter, traditional Sephardi and Turkish melodies, the spirit of klezmer and dancing middle-eastern motifs, the overall effect of this music is at once elegiac, mysterious and compellingly attractive.
