Jazz

Raised as a secular Israeli Jew in Jerusalem, Gilad Atzmon witnessed and empathised with the daily sufferings of Palestinians and spent 20 years trying to resolve for himself the tensions of his background. Finally disillusioned, he moved away from Israel and went to England to study philosophy. Yet since his arrival in London, Atzmon has become known primarily as a pop producer and powerful hardcore bebop saxist. When he started working with Asaf Sirkis, a middle-eastern drummer from his homeland, Atzmon recovered an interest in playing the music of the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe that had been in the back of his mind for years. Adding two young Cambridge musicians to the band, he founded the Orient House Ensemble whose music infuses post-bop jazz with a touch of Ladino, Balkan, Jewish or Turkish melodies and produces haunting and powerful moods.

On "Nostalgico" the quartet adapts elements of the golden era of jazz, including tunes by Ellington and Gershwin, and gives them an Atzmonish twist in the direction of nostalgia, slightly oriental, slightly satirical. Says Atzmon: "I tend to think that I was born at the wrong time and in the wrong place. At the wrong time because I was born when jazz, the musical language I understand the best, became a 'retrospective' art form rather than an authentic expression. In the wrong place because I was born in a small, colonial, nationalistic province in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean Sea. As a youngster, I used to sit on the seashore and meditate over Italian melodies and Afro-American sounds and recollect film scenes in black and white. This album is an illustration of my memories from the seashore. It is about unfulfilled dreams and fragmented melodies." Expect a musical statement that radiates fun and greatness.
