For well over a decade, the Norwegian saxophone player Torben Snekkestad has been one of the most prominent performers in various cutting edge line-ups on the Nordic new jazz and contemporary music scenes.
With Conic Folded he presents his long awaited debut CD.
The album contains 11 new and personal compositions by Snekkestad and he is accompanied by two of Scandinavia's most prominent jazz musicians, Norwegian pianist Jon Balke and the Danish bass player Jonas Westergaard.
With this specific line-up, Snekkestad pays tribute to Jimmy Guiffre's groundbreaking 1960s trio with Paul Bley and Steve Swallow.
On Conic Folded, Torben Snekkestad leads the way on a journey presenting his fresh ideas of this line-up's musical possibilities.
Torben Snekkestad (no) (b.1973) is a dedicated and well-established performer in the field of contemporary music, chamber music and jazz/impro. His highly original and virtuoso playing can be heard in bands like Copenhagen Saxophone Quartet, Spring, Tri O`Trang, London Improvisers Orchestra,Trygve Seim Ensemble and Among Machines (Strønen/Snekkestad. Has premiered numerous of pieces as a soloist with orchestras such as; The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Cikada and Athelas Sinfonietta Copenhagen.
Jon Balke (no) ( b.1955) a leading pianist/composer in Scandinavia and started his career in 1974, when he joined the Arild Andersen group, touring Europe and recording for ECM records. (A record company that has been a loyal supporter ever since). He has scored music for numerous stage productions, chamber groups and orchestras, as well as composing tons of tunes for jazz ensembles. His latest projects include Magnetic North Orchestra, solo piano records and concerts, the percussion based "Batagraf", and a variety of composition projects.
Jonas Westergaard (dk) (b.1976) is unquestionably one of the most original bassists emerging from the new Danish jazz scene, making his serious entrance in the late 1990s.
He plays and records with Oliver Lake, John Tchicai, Michael Blake, Steve Berstein, Kresten Osgood and
his own large group with a.o. Jesper Zeuthen and Jacob Bro.
Jonas has received the Danish Jacob Gade award and the Danish Radio P2 prize. |
