Jerry Granelli - Drums, Bells, Vocals, Producer Jamie Saft - Organ, Vocals, Piano, Producer Chris Kelly - Vocals, Bass, Engineer Scott Hull - Mastering
A meeting of musicians who were somehow made for each other, although they are years apart in age. Recorded live directly to analog, Saft and Granelli let you hear every nuance of sound as they lead you along a disturbing yet enlightening journey. This recording will take you places that you did not know existed.
Like Wilco's Glenn Kotche, Jerry Granelli might be described as an atmospheric drummer. His work all over The Only Juan, his duet CD with pianist Jamie Saft (as well as the roughly contemporaneous Iron Sky with clarinetist Jeff Reilly), is beautiful, resonant, and -- at times -- quite difficult. The CD's 15 tracks flow together in a dark, compassionate whole that moves from nearly silent ambient playing to a tender reading of Joni Mitchell's "Rainy Night House" to densely chaotic metallic clangs. At times, it sounds as if Granelli is manually operating old industrial machinery to produce his sounds. Listening to the CD as a complete form is recommended, as the dynamics of the various tracks even themselves out over the course of the experience. Throughout, neither Granelli nor Saft is particularly rhythmic or melodic. Instead (with the exception of the out of place trap-oriented "Soloduet"), their playing mostly occupies a highly inventive space that lies somewhere between -- a deep ocean of sound that often storms, where it's hard to tell which way is up. ~ Jesse Jarnow, All Music Guide |
