Jerry Granelli - Sound Construction, Producer, Liner Notes, Electric Drums, Editing J. Anthony Granelli Executive Producer Jeff Reilly Sound Construction, Clarinet (Bass), Editing, Clarinet, Producer John Sherlock Photography
Recorded on location in the shop of master blacksmith John Little, Granelli ( UFB, Badlands) and Reilly play a amazing array of steel instruments that were created for this project, including gongs, cymbals, a giant steel bass drum and all metal stringed banjos. In this sonically beautiful recording the listener is taken on an improvisational journey of textures and sounds never before heard.
Percussionist Jerry Granelli and clarinetist Jeff Reilly made this austere, experimental recording in Nova Scotia, where their colleague John Little forges iron sound sculptures. Granelli and Reilly both play these sculptures, creating otherworldly sounds that mesh spontaneously with electro-acoustic percussion, clarinet, and bass clarinet. As Granelli puts it in the liner notes, "The music was already present in the metal." The album is essentially one long composition divided into ten seamless movements. Only the seventh and ninth are tempo-based; movement eight, just under a minute long, consists of one low note played five times on bass clarinet, with each reiteration stressing different overtones. ~ David R.
