Although by the late '90s, the M-Base movement by no longer had as high a profile as it did a few years before, it still was an influence on the music on some of the younger players. Andy Milne, who became involved with Steve Coleman's M-Base collective in 1991, improvises throughout this set over creative and mostly unpredictable funk rhythms. The music generally grooves, yet is full of surprising twists and turns. Milne sometimes hints at McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock, but mostly combines his earlier influences along with his impressive technique to form his own sound. The interplay and tightness between electric bassist Reggie Washington and drummer Mark Prince behind Milne is quite impressive. The guest spots by altoist Steve Coleman (heard on one funky piece and a couple of brooding ballads) and trumpeter Ralph Alessi give some variety to the sound of the music. The performances are less crowded and not as overtly electronic as many others in the free funk field. The occasional vocalizing of Robin Dixon always sounds relaxed no matter what else is going on and gives an otherworldly feel to some of the music; she often functions as a member of the group rather than as a separate voice. Although clearly not for all tastes, as most of the ensembles are dark and vaguely disturbing, this is a stimulating set worth a few close listens. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Andy Milne

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, M-Base, Free Funk

Pianist/keyboardist Andy Milne is one of the most talented musicians to emerge from the M-Base Collective. With his band Cosmic Dapp Theory, Milne blends highly advanced jazz sensibilities with streetwise funk and a substantial dose of social and spiritual commentary. His ambitious, high-energy music strives to reach well beyond the traditional jazz audience.
A native of Canada, Milne studied music at York University and later at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, where he met and impressed alto saxophonist and M-Base creator Steve Coleman. In 1992 he joined Coleman's group, Five Elements, and remained until 1997, working on several of Coleman's other projects along the way, eventually appearing on ten of his albums. Meanwhile, Milne began his own career as a leader. He released The "E" Is Silent on cassette in 1995 and began to tour with his own group. His debut CD, Forward to Get Back, appeared in 1997. In 1998 he formed his current group, Cosmic Dapp Theory, which released New Age of Aquarius a year later on Milne's own Controlology label. The CD garnered widespread critical acclaim and secured the group a two-night stand at the 2000 Montreal Jazz Festival. In addition to his work with Cosmic Dapp Theory, Milne handles sideman duties with artists such as Ravi Coltrane, Carla Cook, and Carlos Ward. He also teaches extensively and serves as his own manager.
