Jack Wilkins - Guitar
Eddie Gomez Bass
Jack DeJohnette Drums
Michael Brecker Sax (Tenor)
Randy Brecker Trumpet, Flugelhorn

Back in 1977, guitarist Jack Wilkins led a very rewarding recording date, Merge, that featured trumpeter Randy Brecker and tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker playing straight-ahead jazz. For this reunion date, Wilkins, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Jack DeJohnette are joined throughout (except for the guitarist's feature on "But Beautiful") by Randy Brecker, although brother Michael is unfortunately only on two selections. Wilkins and Randy Brecker have many fine solos, and the repertoire consists of five group originals, Horace Silver's "Break City," and three standards. Although not reaching the heights of Merge (it is a pity that Michael Brecker was not along for the whole project), this is mostly a high-quality quartet outing of fine post-bop jazz. Worth exploring. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

The essence of durable jazz is how musicians with authoritatively individual voices can collectively create a moving mosaic that has its own singular identity. That is exemplified here.
--- Nat Hentoff

As titled, this incredible new CD actually is a reunion of a band that first recorded for Chiaroscuro Records twenty-four years ago. This is no take-the-money-and-run super band recording. It's five of the greatest jazz musicians alive getting together to reunite and document the evolution of their highly acclaimed talents and musical comraderie. The performances are truly inspired and make it very obvious why these phenomenal musicians have been the recipients of countless Grammys and other prestigious awards.

Leader/Guitarist Jack Wilkins has been a mainstay on the New York Jazz scene for more than four decades, having played, recorded and collaborated with Mel Torme, Ray Charles, Buddy Rich, Manhattan Transfer, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett and many others. Both Randy and Michael Brecker are household names among jazz fans throughout the world. Together and on their own, they have a legacy that exceeds all boundaries. Eddie Gomez first came to prominence during his eleven-year membership with the Bill Evans Trio, and Jack DeJohnette has been redefining jazz drumming since before he replaced Tony Williams in Miles Davis' band back in the Bitches Brew days.

At the time this Reunion was recorded in December 2000, his Whisper Not collaboration with Keith Jarrett was in the top 10 on the Billboard jazz chart. He's also on some of the most commercially successful recordings with Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, George Benson, Freddie Hubbard, and others. Reunion is one of those rare recordings that inspire the listener to just play it over and over again!

Jack Wilkins

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Jun 03, 1944
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop

A superior, slightly underrated improviser, Jack Wilkins has proven on his infrequent recordings as a leader that he ranks near the top. Wilkins, who studied with John Mehegan early on, learned vibes, piano, and classical guitar, but has stuck to jazz guitar throughout his career. He gained a strong reputation during his long association with Buddy Rich. Since then, he has recorded as a sideman with Jack DeJohnette, Eddie Gomez, Phil Woods, Harvie Swartz, and the Brecker Brothers, among others. But it is his own recordings for Mainstream, Music Masters, CTI, and especially his pair of essential Chiaroscuro albums in 1977 (the single CD Merge reissued all of the music except one song) that allow one to hear what a talented player Jack Wilkins has always been.
