Gregg August - acoustic bass
Rudy Royston - drums

"The notion of jazz music being equal measures of construction and deconstruction of musical elements is well heeded. Development of a compatible group of musicians and the assembly of the harmonic and melodic elements to create a tune are both important examples of construction in jazz.
Deconstruction can be just as stimulating by subverting elements at will and allowing the musicians the freedom to express themselves without a script. Saxophonist JD Allen has done his best to bridge the gap between the two on his new recording Shine! He has done so by taking his crack trio, featuring bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston, through the paces on not only his well-constructed compositions but also through more open improvisatory passages. Allen’s penchant for melody comes through in his compositions and improvisations no matter how far off the beaten path. The trio navigates the music with aplomb and makes Shine! a fantastic addition to JD Allen’s growing discography."

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: 1974
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop

Tenor saxophonist J.D. Allen III was born in Detroit, Michigan December 11, 1972. He is a member of the third wave of young lion mainstream jazz players. As a young man, he was influenced by the great musicians who stayed in Detroit, but upon his arrival in New York City, his real apprenticeship began, working with such notables as George Cables, Betty Carter, Ron Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Frank Foster's Loud Minority big band, Butch Morris, David Murray, and Wallace Roney. Among his contemporary collaborators are Winard Harper, Orrin Evans, Gerald Cleaver, Eric Revis, Marcus Gilmore, Russell Gunn, Me'shell N'degeocello, Dave Douglas, Duane Eubanks, Jeremy Pelt, Fabio Morgera, Elisabeth Kontomanou, Lucien Ban, Nigel Kennedy and the Red Records All Stars. Allen's debut recording In Search Of... for the Criss Cross label won him the Best New Artist award in Italy in 1999, and had reviewers praising him for his original compositions and bold playing. That same year, he began touring and recording with drummer Cindy Blackman's ensemble, a band where he is a charter member. His second Criss Cross date, Pharaoh's Children won him Jazziz Magazine's Critics Pick as a Top 10 Album of the Year in 2002. Allen was signed to the Sunnyside label, offering the 2008 CD I Am I Am.
