Joe Locke - Producer, Author, Vibraphone
Jay Anderson Bass, Mastering, Engineer, Mixing
Joe La Barbera Drums
Jonathan Kreisberg Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic)

Joe Locke, through his solid career as a premier jazz vibraphonist, has collaborated with pianists and saxophonists as front line mates, but never a guitarist. Jonathan Kreisberg, a talented newcomer, is Locke's foil for this very interesting set of post-'70s jazz fusion, original modern modal, and mainstream music. A symmetry between the two instruments with their shimmering chordal qualities works very well, supported by the excellent bassist Jay Anderson, and longtime unsung hero of jazz drumming Joe La Barbera. The first cut, Anderson's witty "Time Like the Present" jumps out, using quick time shifts in 6/8 and 7/8 before settling into 3/4. 7/8 is also utilized in the quirky upbeat neo-bopper "The Rosario Material." LaBarbera struts his stuff on a definitive hard bop road song "Appointment in Orvieto" -- their use of restrained dynamics is impressive. This harnessing of volume levels shows up frequently as in the low key modal refrains infused in the standard "All of You," the spirit soul/r&b based "A Word Before You Go," and the latin tinged "Terzani," which reflects the partnership of the ultimate vibes-guitar pairing in contemporary jazz, that of Gary Burton and Pat Metheny. Locke wrote five of the nine selections, and they display his emerging talent in building memorable melodies, but La Barbera is also at it on the finale "Sixth Sense," a darker blues/jazz underground, stealth and steely composition. The guitarist plays varying shades and colors on electric, amplified and acoustic guitars, but it is his bright invention, so in tune with and listening closely to Locke's vibes, that makes this partnership succeed. If you are a fan of Locke you are going to enjoy this recording, while jazz guitar mavens need to pay attention to the nimble fingered rising star Jonathan Kreisberg. ~ Michael G. Joe Locke

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Mar 18, 1959
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Post-Bop, Hard Bop

Born in northern California but raised in the northeastern U.S., Joe Locke is a hard bop/post-bop vibist whose main influences include Bobby Hutcherson and Milt Jackson. Locke was a child when he moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Rochester, NY, where he started playing piano and drums at eight before taking up the vibraphone at 13. Locke, whose father taught classical music, started out playing rock but got heavily into straightahead jazz in his early teens. As a teenager, he studied privately with pianist Phil Markowitz and bassist Steve Davis. Locke was in his early 20s when he moved to New York in 1981, and two years later, he wrote the score for the independent film/documentary El Salvador -- Another Vietnam. The vibist's first several years in New York were a struggle, but as the 1980s progressed, he found himself playing or recording as a sideman for Kenny Barron, Freddy Cole, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Jerry Gonzalez and others. In the '90s, he toured Japan with Eddie Henderson and was employed on albums by Henderson, Cole, Eddie, Grover Washington, Jr., Dianne Reeves, George Cables, Barbara Dennerlein, Hiram Bullock and the Charles Mingus ghost band. Locke toured Russia four times with tenor saxophonist Igor Butman, one of the country's top jazzmen. As a leader, Locke recorded several albums for the Danish SteepleChase label before joining MilestoneFantasy's roster with 1995's Moment to Moment: The Music of Henry Mancini. His subsequent Milestone dates included 1997's Sound Tracks (which concentrated on songs from famous films) and 1998's Slander (And Other Love Songs). Beauty Burning followed in mid-2000; Storytelling appeared the following year. In 2002 Locke returned with his Storytelling band for State of Soul.
