The most gifted Dutch pianist and Europe's #1 bassist present 2007 live recordings from Amsterdam's new music temple! Five original works, four jazz classics, and one ... Scarlatti!

At the end of the seventies, I was a student, just started playing the double bass, I was asked to record a few tunes in some studio. Here I bumped into an amazing young pianist: Bert Van Den Brink. I had never experienced this kind of sensitivity, this kind of listening ability, this kind of wide knowledge and scope into music. What a joy. I could not imagine then that our paths would cross for some many years to come. I left for the United States shortly after this, but some years later we met again as part of the Amstel Octet. With this group we had many opportunities to play together, record some LPs; notably “Hazy Hugs” (released on CD on Challenge Jazz CHR 70058). During these years we grew closer musically and I have some great memories of that period. A few years later vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater asked me to join her group as bassist and musical director/arranger. When an opening came up for a pianist I thought about Bert immediately. For several years we travelled all over the place; so much talking, running on airports, sitting in trains, eating, laughing, listening; never short for words, always interesting Conversations and a growing friendship. Afterwards we kept on playing together; the yearly Gouvy Jazz Festival where we accompanied so many wonderful musicains (Nat Adderley, Toots Thielemans, Von Freeman, Johnny Griffin, Red Holloway,
Benny Golson), but also some exciting recording projects with the likes of Lee Konitz (Challenge Jazz CHR 70053) and Rick Margitza (Challenge Jazz CHR 70062). Bert recorded some more wonderful CDs for my label: the duo with Enrico Pieranunzi (CHR 70069) and Clare Fisher (Challenge Jazz 70104). There was a lot of trio playing with drummer Hans van Oosterhout (Challenge Jazz SACHR 75130) and then there was the wonderful opportunity to play together at the prestigious Muziekgebouw aan het IJ. Mr. Jazz Impuls: Bob Hagen was responsible for putting this concert together and we were both very excited about it. It was a beautiful evening, it turned out to be a very special one, there was a lot of music, a lot of trust and a lot of friendship.
---Enjoy! Hein Van de Geyn (liner notes)

Bert Van Den Brink

From his childhood Bert Van Den Brink (1958) has already been improvising on piano and organ. In this field of music Bert is completely self taught. He got his first piano lesson when he was five years old. In 1976 he started his professional classical education at the conservatory of Utrecht, with Herman Uhlhorn, and graduated cum laude in 1982 with the immediate invitation to take the chair of jazz piano teacher. He gave several classical recitals, but gradually the Balance changed more to jazz.
He performed with musicians like Toots Thielemans, Chet Baker, Nat Adderly, Benny Golson, Lee Konitz, Jesse van Ruller, Clare Fischer, Enrico Pieranunzi, John Engels, Hein Van de Geyn, and many others. In 1990 and 1991 he was the pianist in the quartet of Dee Dee Bridgewater. For some years he was musical director in the band of Denise Jannah. Of his several solo albums, "Jazz at the Pine Hill" (PHCHR 75084) got an Edison Nomination. The first album of the Bert Van Den Brink Trio (with Hein Van de Geyn, bass and Hans van Oosterhout, drums) "Between us" (Challenge Records SACHR 75230) was released in 2004. With vocalist Thomas Oliemans Bert recorded Franz Schubert’s “Winterreise” (FineLineClassical FL 72409). As arranger/producer his works are played by the Metropole Orchestra, the Dutch Wood winds Ensemble, Denise Jannah and others.
In April 2007 Bert received the VPRO-Boy Edgar Award.

Hein Van de Geyn

Hein Van de Geyn (1956) studied classical violin for 15 years, playing pop and blues on guitar, and changed to bass-guitar in. his late teens. Soon Hein played in dixieland-bands, but with his self formed bebop group he got awarded "best soloist" on the 1977 Laren Jazz festival. This made him Pick Up the double bass, and start a career as jazz musician. In 1980 Hein moved to the USA, played and recorded with many great musicians and in 1983 returned to Europe to become one of the most sought after bass players. In 1990 Hein made the first album under his own name, a duo with Lee Konitz. Hein toured and recorded with Philip Catherine, Chet Baker and many years with Dee Dee Bridgewater until he decided in 1996 to pursue his own career as a leader and a bass-teacher. On some 80 records his name can be found as composer, arranger or solo bass player. In 1994 he created his group Baseline with John Abercrombie and Joe LaBarbara and co-founded with Anne de Jong and Joost Leijen the Jazz label CHALLENGE JAZZ , for which he is still producing a growing number of successful recordings. He received the Bird Award and the prestigious Prins Bernhard Fonds Music Prize (for the stimulation of young musicians and his merit for European Jazz in general) and was elected as "Best European Acoustic Bass Player".
