While James Carney has gained the greatest attention for his compositional abilities (winning the 1999 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Composers Award), he is also a highly original pianist. On this trio date with Dan Lutz and Todd Sickafoose taking turns on bass, and Dan Morris on drums and percussion, the emphasis is on Carney's playing, even though he wrote all nine selections (two of which were freely improvised). His melodies are complex and his playing, which in this setting is often both brooding and lyrical, develops naturally from the themes. Morris' exotic percussion and Carney's interest in rhythms from other cultures is felt throughout the music, making this adventurous project into much more than a typical trio date. An excellent Los Angeles-based pianist with an advanced style that builds upon the innovations of the past, James Carney was originally an orchestral brass player and a pop keyboardist from New York. He began playing jazz in 1986, studied at the California Institute of the Arts (where he graduated in 1990), and recorded a couple of stimulating sessions for the Jacaranda label.
