Greg had worked with Brazilian trumpeter, Claudio Roditi and admired his qualities strongly. The fact that Roditi has appeared on many previous Candid dates speaks volumes for the regards of fellow trumpeter Morganelli and label director, Alan Bates.

In considering the music made by his quintet in a New York studio in September 1992. Greg pays tribute to Claudio, pianist Hilton Ruiz, bass player George Mraz and drummer Kenny Washington for their superb co-operation on the date. No egos on display here to get in the way of the music!

Straight Ahead is an apt title for this CD because it accurately describes the musical philosophy and actuality of Greg Agate's mature and expressive style.

The title perfectly summarizes this quintet date -- hard bop and standards delivered professionally and competently by an experienced band. Greg Abate is a fluid alto and tenor saxophonist who executes the chord changes, progressions, and solos efficiently, while trumpeter Claudio Roditi adds some Afro-Latin spice and hot licks, and pianist Hilton Ruiz, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Kenny Washington keep the rhythmic center together. Mraz's bass sounds undermiked at times, but otherwise this date does exactly what it set out to: showcase jazz professionals comfortable in their environment and with their material. ~ Ron Wynn, All Music Guide

Greg Abate

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: May 31, 1947 in Fall River, MA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Big Band, Bop, Mainstream Jazz

A superior bop player who finally emerged on records as a leader in the 1990s, Greg Abate had picked up experience playing with the Ray Charles Orchestra (starting in 1973 when he succeeded David "Fathead" Newman) and the Artie Shaw band when it was headed by clarinetist Dick Johnson during 1985-1987. Based in Rhode Island, Abate has played at many festivals and club dates, mostly on the East Coast and in Europe. Although he also plays tenor, flute, and soprano, alto is his main ax. Abate, who considers Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond, and Phil Woods to be among his most important influences, has recorded as a leader for Seaside, Candid, and Blue Chip Jazz (Bop Lives!).
