The goal of a jazz repertory band is to keep timeless songs and arrangements alive by performing them, sometimes with a bit of updating, without them, the music can be lost for good; many of the arrangements heard on this release were painstakingly transcribed from the original records. The Kentucky Jazz Repertory Orchestra draws from the books of several bands of the Swing Era, including Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, and Glenn Miller, along with bandleaders like Benny Carter, Harlan Leonard, and Jimmy Lunceford, whose contributions tend to be overlooked from this period. The musicians heard on this CD are accomplished players who may not be widely known, but they master the arrangements and solo with gusto as they interpret gems like "Jumpin' at the Woodside," "For Dancers Only," "Flying Home," "Jack the Bear" and "Rockin' in Rhythm," in addition to nearly forgotten works like "Skee" and "Hairy Joe Jump." These recordings aren't meant to substitute for the originals, of course, but it is fun to hear modern-day musicians still exploring such memorable music. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide |
