An amazing journey and story that began in 1994 when Randy Brecker met Wlodek Pawlik in Germany when the well-known, award winning Polish pianist played with the Western Jazz Quartet.
This meeting would make sense 11 or so years later, when Randy's brother, Michael, was diagnosed with leukemia. Randy, along with his family immediately began looking for eastern Euro donors; family or relatives were believed to be the best match. Making contact with Wlodek, they traced Brecker's relatives to an area in Poland: Tykocin (his mother's maiden name [and still the name of the Rabbi in the local ancient synagogue] was Tecosky). In honour of this discovery, Wlodek wrote the Tykocin Jazz Suite - the musical story of Randy's 'Nostalgic Journey' and homecoming.

'Randy Brecker, Nostalgic Journey: Tykocin Jazz Suite (Summit Records) Three words come to mind after a listen to trumpeter Randy Brecker's latest project: stunning, poignant, breathtaking. This is a homecoming project of great importance. Last summer, Brecker made an emotional journey to Tykocin, the area in Poland where his grandfather lived before emigrating to the United States. It was pinpointed when Randy and other family members were looking for eastern European bone marrow donors who might be a match for his brother Michael, two years before the saxophonist lost his battle with a very rare form of leukemia. Polish composer and pianist Wlodek Pawlik wrote this homecoming suite, and performed it with Brecker and the Symphony Orchestra of the Podlasie Opera and Philharmonic in Bialystok, Poland. The blend of classical orchestra and jazz quartet is seamless and feels natural. Highlights: Brecker's intense soloing on "Nostalgic Journey," "Let's All Go to Heaven," "Magic Seven "and "Blue Rain" - and his strong musical empathy with Pawlik's excellent trio. This one may go down as one of the finest and most important works in Brecker's extensive discography.' -Ken Franckling

This disc tells an amazing story that began in 1994 when Randy Brecker met Wlodek Pawlik in Germany, when the award-winning Polish pianist played with the Western Jazz Quartet. This meeting would come into sharp focus 11 years later, when Randy's brother Michael was diagnosed with leukemia and his family immediately started searching for a bone marrow donor.
Making contact with Pawlik, the family traced Brecker's relatives to an area in Poland called Tykocin. In honor of this discovery, Pawlik wrote an orchestral/jazz suite about Randy's "homecoming," and although a donor was not found, the Breckers discovered their roots. The recording has already won several "Best of 2008" awards in Poland, and Brecker's story was recently featured in Poland's Newsweek.
Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound of jazz, RB, and rock for more than four decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums by a wide range of artists.
Wlodek Pawlik has released 16 albums as a leader, and won numerous domestic and international music contests. He was honored as Jazz Musician of the Year by Warsaw's legendary jazz club Akwarium.

Randy Brecker is essentially a fine hard bop trumpet soloist, but one versatile enough to fit into nearly any setting, including in the pop world, funk bands, and electronic fusion. He studied classical trumpet and attended Indiana University. Brecker was with Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967, and spent 1968-1969 playing with Horace Silver's quintet. He also appeared with the big bands of Clark Terry, Duke Pearson, Frank Foster, and the Thad JonesMel Lewis orchestra. After playing with the early fusion group Dreams in 1969, he worked with Larry Coryell's Eleventh House and Billy Cobham, in addition to keeping very busy with studio work. He teamed up with Michael Brecker in the popular funk-oriented Brecker Brothers (1974-1979); in the '80s he often collaborated with his wife, pianist/vocalist Eliane Elias; and in the '90s he toured with the reunited Brecker Brothers. But Randy Brecker still sounds best when in a freewheeling bebop combo, and fortunately he occasionally records in that type of spontaneous setting.
