Michael Wintsch piano Gerry Hemingway drums Banz Oester bass (Schertler Audio Transducers and Velvet Strings)
The CD is made up of thirteen compositions, the majority of which are written by Swiss-born Wintsch.
His talent, both as composer and pianist blossoms within this format including two of his long-time collaborators, Hemingway and Oester.
A versatile pianist who has performed in a wide range of settings, Michel Wintsch leads an invigorating trio with drummer Gerry Hemingway and bassist Ban Oester. Most of the pieces were written by Wintsch, and they tend to reflect his somewhat romantic, just left-of-center approach. His classical influences are openly evident as he comfortably moves his hand in separate directions. At times, the trio becomes a bit self-absorbed, and the listener may drift, but at others there is a powerful synergy. Hemingway is a powerful partner, as is to be expected, but it is clearly the pianist's show. The 13 tracks range in style (bop to post-bop) and timing (from just over a minute to more than seven minutes) and, naturally, some work better than others. None of the tunes are particularly memorable, though Wintsch's playing shows flashes of brilliance. ~ Steven Loewy, All Music Guide |
