Roger Kellaway - Piano

Despite having been involved in hundreds of albums over his career solo recording such as this of Roger Kellaway are surprisingly rare. Working with everyone from Barbara Steisand (producing the Oscar nominated film score for "A Star is Born") to Bobby Darrin to Joni Mitchell he has become an important figure in the story of modern music. Roger Kellaway has moved between classical, jazz, pop and film scoring with ease over the past four decade and continues to produce critically acclaimed work to this day.

This album is a fantastic collection of arrangements from an artist who is finally getting the recognition he deserves within jazz circles.

Roger Kellaway has been described as 'a musical chameleon' and 'the most awesome jazz pianist quite possibly anywhere on earth'. His discography runs to more than two hundred fifty albums. He's performed with everyone from Elvis to Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie to Yo Yo Ma, Joni Mitchell to Mancini and Quincy Jones to Michael Tilson Thomas. Kellaway is not only a major pianist, he is a composer of protean ability, writing in the jazz, classical and popular music fields, and scoring for films and television. This seminal five star album was recorded in New York City in 1986 by Choice owner/producer Gerry MacDonald.

Roger Kellaway is a brilliant two-handed pianist whose versatile style and strong sense of humor keep him open to idioms ranging from swing to free jazz, pop to classical. On this date, he digs into six standards. "A Time for Love" and "Here's That Rainy Day" drag a bit, but things improve after that, particularly during a mid-tempo "How Deep Is the Ocean" and an adventurous exploration of "Skylark." Ain't Misbehavin' is one of Kellaway's better jazz dates. [A Japanese edition of the CD was also released.] ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Roger Kellaway

Active Decades: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: Nov 01, 1939 in Newton, MA
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Big Band, Dixieland, Bop, Hard Bop, Contemporary Jazz

A virtuosic pianist whose phenomenal technique rivals Dick Hyman's, Roger Kellaway's work in commercial settings prior to the 1980s led to him being initially overlooked in the jazz world. He played piano and bass at the New England Conservatory (1957-1959) and actually left school to play bass with Jimmy McPartland. Switching permanently to piano, Kellaway picked up experience working with Kai Winding, Al CohnZoot Sims, and Clark TerryBob Brookmeyer (1963-1965). He recorded with many players, including Ben Webster, Maynard Ferguson, Wes Montgomery, and Sonny Rollins, and in 1966 moved to Los Angeles where he played with Don Ellis' innovative orchestra. Kellaway became Bobby Darin's musical director, worked in the studios (his piano is heard playing the theme of All in the Family), wrote film scores, experimented with electric keyboards, played with Tom Scott, and recorded with his popular (but mostly non-jazz) Cello Quartet. Although he gigged locally with Zoot Sims and Harry "Sweets" Edison, it was not until the mid-'80s that Kellaway started playing jazz nearly full-time. His many records since then (for Concord, All Art, Stash, and Chiaroscuro) attest to his impressive talents.
