Although the name "Manhattan Jazz Quintet" may be more well-known in Japan than in New York, the individual members are all stalwarts of the American jazz scene. Trumpeter Lew Soloff, tenor saxophonist George Young, pianist David Matthews, bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Peter Erskine comprise the group. Their coming together in this group has resulted in some of the most exciting and progressive bop to be recorded in a while. Recorded live at Sweet Basil in New York, this disc captures the excitement of five seasoned improvisers, who had been challenging each other musically for years. |
