Digitally remastered edition of the debut album from Jazz great Ramsey Lewis and his trio, originally released in 1956. From their first appearance in the Chicago SRO club, the Ramsey Lewis Trio was considered, by the public and critics to be one of the brightest groups to appear on the Jazz scene.

From their first appearance in the Chicago SRO club in the spring of 1957, the Ramsey Lewis Trio was considered, by the public and critics, one of the brightest jazz groups to appear in the jazz scene. Great jazzmen such as Dizzy Gillespie called them "A gust of fresh air on the musical scene", and Duke Ellington said they were "A bouquet of tonal delight." A trio with a rare combination of stimulating music and personal magnetism, the group was in the mold of the Modern Jazz Quartet - thoughtful, studious, exploratory, but possessing a quietly throbbing, thoroughly captivating beat.

This was pianist Ramsey Lewis' first album, a trio set with bassist El Dee Young and drummer Red Holt. Lewis sounds like a cross between John Lewis and Oscar Peterson, playing melodic and lightly boppish versions of such pieces as "Carmen," Russ Freeman's "The Wind," "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen," Gerry Mulligan's "Limelight" and a few originals. Five of the nine selections have since been reissued on CD but the full LP is worth getting. Chances are that this historic album can be picked up fairly inexpensively at a used record store; it is worth taking a chance on. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Ramsey Lewis has long straddled the boundary between bop-oriented jazz and pop music. Most of his recordings (particularly by the mid-'60s) were very accessible and attracted a large non-jazz audience. In 1956, he formed a trio with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Red Holt. From the start (1958), their records for ArgoCadet were popular, although in the early days, they had a strong jazz content. In 1958, Lewis also recorded with Max Roach and Lem Winchester. On the 1965 albums The In Crowd and Hang On, Ramsey made the pianist into a major attraction and from that point, on his records became much more predictable and pop-oriented. In 1966, his trio's personnel changed with bassist Cleveland Eaton and drummer Maurice White (later the founder of Earth, Wind & Fire) joining Lewis. In the 1970s, Lewis often played electric piano, although by later in the decade he was sticking to acoustic and hiring an additional keyboardist. He can still play melodic jazz when he wants to, but Ramsey Lewis has mostly stuck to easy listening pop music during the past 30 years. In 2004 he released Time Flies, a look back at some of his most popular songs through new recordings.
