All these years later, Kansas still rule the classic rock radio airwaves, and continue to put on simply spellbinding shows of the highest caliber. And what better way to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the release of Kansas self-titled 1974 debut than with a live DVD, There s Know Place Like Home, which will be released on September 28th, 2009 . A hi-def for Blu-ray release (mixed in 5.1 surround sound), the show was filmed on February 7th of this year in their home state (at Washburn University s White Concert Hall), and was certainly not your average affair. For this show, the group - which includes singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarist Rich Williams, violinist David Ragsdale, bassist Billy Greer, and drummer Phil Ehart was united with former members Kerry Livgren (guitar/keyboards) and Steve Morse (guitar), as well as the 50-piece Washburn University Orchestra.brbrWhen asked how it was to play alongside an orchestra, Ehart responds, It's always an adventure. Adding another 50 people to your band can always prove eventful. Our biggest memories are usually of certain symphonies that look down their noses at our music. What's funny about this is that those symphonies are usually the ones that have the most trouble playing our scores! And when the topic of playing with Livgren and Morse comes up, Williams gets downright philosophical. Very comfortable...like loose fitting underwear. Comprised of a solid track listing that includes fine renditions of Kansas classics ( Dust in the Wind, Carry On Wayward Son, etc.) and fan favorites ( Hold On, On the Other Side, etc.), There s Know Place Like Home will surely go down as one of the group s best-ever live performances.brbrIn addition to the DVD s release, Kansas members (save Walsh) have released the debut of their new side band, Native Window, which issued their self-titled album on June 23rd, and open for Kansas on the summer/fall tours. And as far as Kansas popularity, it continues to flourish, as their classic ballad, Dust in the Wind recently obtained gold status as a digital download, while their classic rocker, Carry On Wayward Son, is featured on the games Guitar Hero II and Rock Band II. They still get a lot of attention, still get a lot of airplay, says Williams about the enduring popularity of Kansas songs. They have retained a relevance through the years, that only a small percent of recordings do. With the release of There s Know Place Like Home and the supporting tour, Kansas will prove this theory as fact once again this summer and fall.

Starting in the 1990s, quite a few hard rock bands decided to go "the symphonic route," by putting on concerts that merged big guitar riffs with swirling strings. The Scorpions, Kiss, and Metallica all immediately come to mind as bands that have taken the symphonic plunge. But admittedly, the results varied wildly. But one band that seemed custom-made for a symphonic collaboration was Kansas -- who have always favored technicality and layered compositions over your basic three-chord rock. And in 2009, Kansas officially joined the "symphonic rock age," with the release of CD and DVD sets (sold separately), titled There's Know Place Like Home. Recorded/filmed live at Washburn University's White Concert Hall (in Topeka, KS), the group is joined on-stage by the 50-piece Washburn University Orchestra, and the results make such already-bombastic-sounding tracks as "Carry on Wayward Son" even more grandiose. And since songs like "Dust in the Wind" contained strings on the original studio version, it's not that far of a stretch for Kansas to reconnect with their symphonic side. Add to it appearances in the set by former members Kerry Livgren and Steve Morse, and you have certainly one of the better (if not the best) Kansas DVDs to be released so far. [A DVD version was also released.]

Kansas

Active Decades: '70s, '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: 1970 in Topeka, KS
Genre: Rock
Styles: Prog-Rock/Art Rock, Pop/Rock, Arena Rock, Album Rock

Fusing the complexity of British prog rock with an American heartland sound representative of their name, Kansas were among the most popular bands of the late '70s; though typically dismissed by critics, many of the group's hits remain staples of AOR radio play lists to this day. Formed in Topeka in 1970, the founding members of the group -- guitarist Kerry Livgren, bassist Dave Hope, and drummer Phil Ehart -- first played together while in high school; with the 1971 addition of classically trained violinist Robbie Steinhardt, they changed their name to White Clover, reverting back to the Kansas moniker for good upon the 1972 arrivals of vocalist/keyboardist Steve Walsh and guitarist Richard Williams. The group spent the early part of the decade touring relentlessly and struggling for recognition; initially, their mix of boogie and prog rock baffled club patrons, but in due time they established a strong enough following to win a record deal with the Kirshner label.
Kansas' self-titled debut LP appeared in 1974; while only mildly successful, the group toured behind it tirelessly, and their fan base grew to the point that their third effort, 1975's Masque, sold a quarter of a million copies. In 1976, Leftoverture truly catapulted Kansas to stardom. On the strength of the smash hit "Carry On Wayward Son," the album reached the Top Five and sold over three million copies. 1977's Point of Know Return was even more successful, spawning the monster hit "Dust in the Wind." While the 1978 live LP Two for the Show struggled to break the Top 40, its studio follow-up, Monolith, the band's first self-produced effort, reached the Top Ten. That same year, Walsh issued a solo record, Schemer-Dreamer.
In the wake of 1980's Audio-Visions, Kansas began to splinter; both Hope and Livgren became born-again Christians, the latter issuing the solo venture Seeds of Change, and their newfound spirituality caused divisions within the band's ranks. Walsh soon quit to form a new band, Streets; the remaining members forged on without him, tapping vocalist John Elefante as his replacement. The first Kansas LP without Walsh, 1982's Vinyl Confessions, launched the hit "Play the Game Tonight," but after only one more album, 1983's Drastic Measures, they disbanded. In 1986, however, Kansas re-formed around Ehart, Williams, and Walsh; adding the famed guitarist Steve Morse as well as bassist Billy Greer, the refurbished band debuted with the album Power, scoring a Top 20 hit with "All I Wanted." When the follow-up, 1988's In the Spirit of Things, failed to hit, seven years passed before the release of their next effort, Freaks of Nature. Always Never the Same followed in 1998. Seeing the return of founder singer/songwriter Kerry Livgren, Somewhere to Elsewhere was released in 2000.
