Louis Armstrong went from privation and speakeasies to Broadway and Hollywood. In the Thirties, he became an international celebrity. In the Fifties, he toured Africa and had his life story documented on LP and filmed for TV. He was the first US entertainer to become a world statesman.
This indispensable collection ranges from Armstrong's sideman sessions in the Twenties to some of his greatest Thirties and Forties big band tracks, to his pop hits of the Sixties. The Session
Original recordings produced by Milt Gabler, Norman Granz, Michael Kapp, Bob Thiele, and others. Selected and sequenced by Alun Morgan. Production managed by Bryan Koniarz. Research managed by Ben Young. Mastered by Kevin Reeves at Universal Mastering Studios - East. Universal Mastering Studios-East and -West and Universal West Library
Covering over 50 years of Louis Armstrong's career, this three-CD set from the Verve archives starts in the juke joints and speakeasies of the '20s and ends up documenting his pop hits of the '60s. Chronicling the achievements of a prolific and diverse performer of Anderson's caliber is difficult, but this release gives a strong, broad overview of one of the great pioneers of jazz. The Ultimate Collection features jazz greats such as Coleman Hawkins, "Fatha" Earl Hines, and Jack Teagarden, as well as vocal performances by Billie Holiday, Bing Crosby, the Mills Brothers, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide |
