Jazz / Stride, New Orleans Jazz, Trad Jazz
Though no tangible evidence suggests that Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong ever played together, one might get that impression from the cover art of this 20-track CD. In fact, the compilation does feature their respective recordings as leaders, many selections being definitive, and any fan of theirs will easily recognize who's who. As an introduction to jazz there can be no doubt Morton and Armstrong are the two most important early jazz pioneers, with Sidney Bechet on their heels in terms of innovation. This primer for New Orleans jazz students can be recommended, with the caveat that there are superior collections by either artist individually available -- the Smithsonian Mortons and the Hot Fives and Sevens from Armstrong -- and they should come into your library first. ~ Michael G.
