Jazz
A gifted pianist, writer and arranger with a thirst for adventure and over three dozen solo albums to his name, Bob James is a jazz giant who has achieved critical and commercial success with a wide variety of musical approaches. Spanning the period 1974 to 2007, this collection brings together his finest recordings - for CTI, his own label Tappan Zee, Warner Bros and, most recently, Koch Records - as a solo artist and in collaboration with talented friends. Laid back, funky, spirited and soothing, here is the very best of Bob James.
REVIEWS:
Genial jazz giant Bob James's lengthy and highly successful career has seen him record more than three dozen albums since his 1974 debut, and this bumper double disc set cherry picks 26 of the best on a 150-minute package that also includes in-depth liner notes and an interview with the man himself. Pianist James' smooth style is sufficiently commercial to attract a much wider audience than most jazzers, and the centrepiece of this uplifting collection is Angela, his beautiful theme for 1970s sitcom 'Taxi'. There is much else to commend here, however, including the spirited Westchester Lady, the evocative New York Mellow and a funky Feels Like Makin' Love. [Alan Jones - Music Week]
If there were such a thing as a jazz Guilty Pleasures, Bob James would be its Supertramp. He's the composer whose licks and grooves have been essential cogs in the clockwork of smooth American session jazz for four decades, whether in the shadows behind Roberta Flack and Quincy Jones, or out front with his own albums and the poignant theme for Taxi, the television series. His signature keyboards are effortlessly effective: the skill and learning are worn lightly. This double CD, programmed in chronological order, demonstrates that 1970s classics such as Nautilus and Westchester Lady have worn well. When James's keys dance over a funky, popping rhythm, subtly meshed in with clever (but never clever-clever) arrangements, he achieves something like a smooth-jazz state of grace.
