Brasserie Trio is Carlo Actis Dato on reeds, Alberto Mandarini on trumpet and Lauro Rossi on trombone.
The twelve pieces on this CD were recorded live in Pisa in December, 1998. The aim of this trio is to create music of quality which is both fun to play and fun to listen to, with strong theatrical and visual elements which captivate the audience.
This version of this Italian trio features trumpeter Alberto Mandarini, trombonist Lauro Rossi, and saxophonist Carlos Actis Dato live in concert. All three are fine improvisers, but what distinguishes the set is the usual wacky antics of the players, who combine folk melodies, jazz bop, avant- solos, with a touch of silliness. While the level of performance is usually high, and all three performers improvise with skill and passion, the humor sometimes goes on a bit too far and some of the jokes sound as though you just had to be there. Rossi's big sound on trombone and Mandarini's fluid brass are highlights throughout, though Dato's compositions can sound repetitive. The trumpeter's opening "1935" is a splendid, with its delightfully farcical throwback to an earlier era. These guys love to have fun, and it shows. ~ Steve Loewy, All Music Guide |
