This engaging trio of percussion, violin, and guitar/electronics, creates sonically rich improvised music that is transforming and evocative. Combining high musicianship, sensitive interaction, a dedication to unencumbered personal expression, and an approach to free improvisation that draws broadly from abstract contemporary to the elemental past, Richard Carr, Mike Nord, and Georg Hofmann infuse the spirit of jazz into an improvised music that moves beyond stylistic labels to a place that is liberating to both musicians and audiences alike. On this CD the trio Carr Nord Hofmann is augmented by the pianist Art Maddox and the saxophonist Randy Kem.
The ensemble of Richard Carr, Mike Nord, and Georg Hofmann is a slightly unusual one in that they perform free improvisations but are not shy about playing perfectly tonal, utilizing themes, and building up their improvisations melodically. Their music transports listeners to places that are far from unpleasant, even during the more heated passages. Much of the playing on In Walks Art is surprisingly gentle, with repetition, drone sections, and melodic development making the music more accessible than expected. For this project, pianist Art Maddox and saxophonist Randy Kem are added to the group and both are major assets, easily fitting into the concept.
