Front cover artwork (reproduced above) by Lora Denis
This new duo of Slava Guyvoronsky (trumpet) and Evelin Petrova (accordion and voice) will take the new music scene by storm!
Chonyi is a Buddhist notion, one of the Bardo states, in which the soul wanders through mystic worlds searching for the depths of its own self.
One of the eleven pieces on this CD, Celestial Yaha, was awarded the special Astor Piazolla prize for compositions in the Italian city of Castelfidardo in October 1998.
While documenting some of the most important free-style jazz from around the globe, Leo Feigin of Leo Records has focused on discovering new talent, particularly in the former Soviet Union. Here, startlingly unique trumpeter Guyvoronsky is teamed with young accordionist Evelin Petrova for a series of eleven duets that incorporate folk music and jazz in an experimental avant-garde approach that defies convention and focuses on color, humor, and shading. At times, the trumpeter seems to incorporate some of the innovations of Art Ensemble trumpeter, Lester Bowie, while at others Petrova's little noises, long tones, and mellifluous sound contradict the traditions of free jazz. Petrova displays a somewhat minimalist, serious style: a perfect counterpoint to her partner. There is enough diversity throughout to reward repeated listening, though it all casts a bit of an oddball hue. ~ Steve Loewy, All Music Guide |
