GIANCARLO NICOLAI DUO consists of Giancarlo Nicolai (acoustic and electric guitar, percussion) and Regula Neuhaus (vibra-harp, voice, percussion).
This outrageous duo recording by guitar genius Giancarlo Nicolai and vibra-harpist, singer, and percussionist Regula Neuhaus is a series of 14 spontaneous compositions (to borrow a term from Misha Mengelberg). They come from some territory outside territory, where two instruments should not be able to communicate at such an intimate level when the context is this abstract. But they do. In fact, the music created by this duo is so intimate -- despite its wide range of moods and colors -- it is actually tender. A meeting that is permeated with melodic insight and sub-tonal magic. In "Mozet Byt." The vibra-harp is the lightning rod for the various scapular architectures at work, framing and un-framing guitar lines that drive themselves to the heights before tumbling completely into the warm arms of Neuhaus' instrument. Elsewhere, in "Il Lamento Dell A'Bruzzo," Nicolai's electric guitar returns the favor, asserting itself rhythmically and harmonically as a net for Neuhaus' explorations of tonal beauty and landscape. This album is a portrait of memory as it flashes by land, sea, incident, sky, and life itself. There are echoes of the folk music of many lands played as off the cuff as only memory can be. And as is the case with all reminiscences, especially through the expressive impressionism of music, they are never exacting, only suggestive of an emotion which has long since influenced whatever the listener is feeling. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide |
