The first CD from Finland in the Leo Records catalogue. Baron Paakkunainen (saxes), Eero Ojanen (piano), Teppo Hauta-aho (bass) are the top Finnish musicians who started making music together some thirty years ago. Over the years they played with Anthony Braxton, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, and quite recently with Cecil Taylor. One can't ask for higher credentials than that. 60 minutes of music have a definite Finnish flavour.

Leave it to producer Leo Feigen's Leo Lab label to find this free-style jazz trio from the wintry heights of Finland. This versatile group features Baron Paakkunainen on flutes and saxophones, Eero Ojanen on piano, and Teppo Hauta-aho on bass, cello, and siren. These fellows take their time for their nine interactive improvisations, followed by a suite of five parts. The results generally satisfy, with all three taking an equal role in what ranges from rhythmically mesmerizing to an occasional visit to the wild side. The trio is very Scandinavian, with icy flute fluttering around a pensive keyboard, and attractive bass or cello throwing in its money's worth. While this music treads the proverbial line between classical and jazz, the distinction is irrelevant: the trio produces slightly off-center freely improvised world music. While it might drag a tad at times, the usually restrained sounds from the north offer a slightly skewered and subtle interpretation of original material wrapped in an appealingly soft lining. ~ Steve Loewy, All Music Guide
