The Wally Shoup Trio follows up its critically acclaimed Leo debut "Fusillades & Lamentations" with another batch of improvisations described as "Fire Music with a lot of Soul". Shoup's alto sax, Reuben Radding's bass and Bob Rees's drums spontaneously combust to create intense music that revels in its hard-boiled elegance. As the title suggests, the Wally Shoup Trio explodes in a soulful exorcism. Another original Shoup painting graces the cover.
The trio of altoist Wally Shoup, bassist Reuben Radding and drummer Bob Rees create 11 group improvisations on this CD. Shoup has a powerful tone and sometimes distorts his sound in a way reminiscent of late-'60s Pharoah Sanders although overall he is a more lyrical player. Radding and especially Rees are rarely content to merely accompany Shoup and they constantly make their presence known. Although some of these selections are screamfests, other pieces are freely improvised ballads. There is variety in moods and methods, the musicians are excellent and they work together quite well. Each of the players deserve to be better known. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
