The Soegaard Ensemble (Jan Krogh-trumpet, Fredrik Soegaard-guitar, soundprocessing, Steffen Poulsen-alto sax, computer, Frank Jensen-piano, Lars Juul-percussion) plays contemporary improvised music using chaos-theory, forwards- and backwards-running time/space structures and implicate orders from the boundaries of science. Guitar solos run by mandelbrot fractal algorithms and abstract sound-structures turning the horizontal time of traditional musical forms into vertical-time sound tapestries, bring this truly contemporary music far into 21st century.
Six exotic adventures in time are the theme for Chronox, a warped romp through space, where seconds run backwards and minutes bathe in three-dimensional lapses of relativity. These experiments are formulaic, with an oddball speculative spin. Thus, the five musicians (Soegaard on guitar, Jan Krough on trumpet, Frank Jensen on piano, and Lars Juul on percussion) find their contributions viewed through a concave lens, not only distorted by processors and computers, but run backwards as well. The result works better than expected, and the individual improvising, particularly from leader Soegaard, but also the others, is often stimulating. Off-kilter, rumbling, non-swinging, and sensitive, Chronox is music for the millennium -- difficult, disturbing, yet ultimately challenging.
