"Miles voice is one of the freshest trumpet sounds I've heard in a long while. He has enormous power behind his notes which can be honed to razor-sharpness, muted, distoned and squeezed at will... It is clear that Ron Miles has a wider outlook than some of his trumpet peers and a good deal more emotional force than most of them.
- Roland Ramanan - Wire Magazine, Oct.'90

Trumpeter Ron Miles' recorded debut as a leader is more of a blowing date than his later sets. Teamed up with some of Colorado's top players (Fred Hess on tenor and flute, pianist Art Lande, bassist Ken Walker and drummer Bruno Carr), Miles explores two of his originals, one by Hess, Thelonious Monk's "Ugly Beauty," and Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," and Charles Mingus' "Pithecanthropus Erectus"; the latter tune is rarely revived. Miles displays an original tone and an active musical imagination during this excellent post-bop CD from the Denver-based Capri label. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Ron Miles

Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s
Born: 1963 in Indianapolis, IN
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Modern Creative, Post-Bop, Avant-Garde Jazz

An adventurous trumpeter, Ron Miles has made a strong impression with his Gramavision releases. A resident of Denver since he was 11, he began playing the trumpet seriously in junior high school and studied music at the University of Denver (1981-1985) and the Manhattan School of Music (1986). In addition to local gigs, Miles visited Italy in the summer of 1992 with the play Sophisticated Ladies and was a member of the Mercer Ellington Orchestra for a couple years. He played frequently with Bill Frisell during 1994-1995, also recording with the guitarist, and worked as assistant professor of music at Denver's Metropolitan Stage College. Ron Miles has recorded for Prolific (1986) and Capri (1990), as well as several advanced sets for Gramavision.
