Walking the tightrope that is stretched between history and progress is a difficult task for a young jazz musician. During the last event-filled five years, Jeremy Pelt has explored many of the post-war jazz trends, but for his HighNote debut recording he has settled into the acoustic, post-bop format with his regular band that includes the tenor saxophone of J.D. Allen with the excellent rhythm section of Danny Grissett on piano, Dwayne Burno on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums. One listen and it is easy to see why he was voted Rising Star on the Trumpet five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association.

Active Decade: '00s Born: Sep 04, 1976 in CA Genre: Jazz Styles: Post-Bop, Straight-Ahead Jazz, Jazz Instrument, Trumpet Jazz
Born on November 4, 1976, jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt is an up and coming firebrand in the tradition of Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. A California native, Pelt first began playing the trumpet in elementary school focusing on classical studies. However, it was not until joining his high school jazz band that he became strongly interested in changing directions and pursuing jazz full-time. This led to studying jazz improvisation and film-scoring at Berklee School of Music in Boston where he earned his B.A. in Professional Music. Since graduating from college, Pelt has perfomed and/or recorded with some of the jazz world's most high profile players including Roy Hargrove, Ravi Coltrane, Greg Osby, Cassandra Wilson and the Mingus Big Band among others. He released his solo debut Profile for Fresh Sound in 2002 followed by Insight released on the Criss Cross label in 2003. --- Matt Collar, All Music Guide |
