New Orleans musicians have a long-standing tradition--no doubt brought on by the need to fill up that fourth set of the evening--of playing unlikely covers that end up transcending the original hits. The Meters did it with "Wichita Lineman." Irma Thomas did it with "Wind Beneath My Wings." And Galactic set out to do it on this live collection, peppering their homecoming concert with groove-laden covers torn from the songbooks of Duke Ellington ("Blue Pepper"), Allen Toussaint ("Working in a Coal Mine"), Chocolate Milk ("My Mind Is Hazy"), and even Black Sabbath ("Sweet Leaf"). While those tracks earn points for novelty and eclecticism, the keepers here are unreleased originals like "Moog Marmalade" (think vintage Meters funk with lots of modal sax and analog synth tossed in for good measure) and fan favorites like "Two Clowns," which is arguably Galactic's most interesting song to date. The album is not without its excesses (the 90-seconds of applause baiting at the end of "Lumpology" wears thin quickly), but New Orleans's answer to Medeski Martin & Wood wouldn't have earned their place in the jam-band pantheon without an implicit understanding that anything worth doing is worth overdoing.
---Bill Forman

A jam band from the same New Orleans as the Meters explicates the infinite groove before an appreciative local audience too busy sweating up the dancefloor to notice the jokesters on stage covering Duke Ellington, Allen Toussaint (by way of the legendary Lee Dorsey), and Black Sabbath. Occasional lapses into artiness for its own sake (always a risk with ironic jazz-chop slummers) are forgiven easily enough, because the charitable young hippies who comprise the majority of the band's boogie-minded fan base are kind people that way.

Galactic

Active Decades: '90s and '00s
Born: 1993
Genre: Jazz, Rock
Styles: Acid Jazz, Fusion, Jam Bands, Jazz-Funk, Post-Bop

The New Orleans-based jazz-funk ensemble Galactic formed in 1994; originally an eight-piece, the group soon pared down to an instrumental sextet comprised of guitarist Jeff Raines, organist Rich Vogel, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonists Ben Ellman and Jason Mingledorff, and drummer Stanton Moore. Later adding Crescent City music scene vet Theryl deClouet on vocals, Galactic built a fervent local following on the strength of a relentless live schedule that included opening slots for group heroes including the Meters, Maceo Parker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood. In 1996 Galactic issued their debut LP, Coolin' Off; upon signing to major label Capricorn, they re-released the album two years later, soon followed by the all-new Crazyhorse Mongoose. Since that time, they have released a handful of albums including Late for the Future in 2000, Ruckus in 2003, and From the Corner to the Block in 2007. The band itself released a pair of live albums of its sets at Jazz Fest in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 they issued their most ambitious project to date with Ya-Ka-May, a wholesale New Orleans recording featuring guest appearances by everyone from Irma Thomas and Big Chief Bo Dollis to the Rebirth Brass Band and Walter "Wolfman" Washington.
