Cindy Blackman- drums Ravi Coltrane- tenor saxophone; Jacky Terrasson- piano/Fender Rhodes; Ron Carter- bass
Blackman has established herself in an amazingly short period of time, as one of the most creative and talented jazz musicians/composers/drummers in the world today. Her records for the MUSE label garnered laurel wreaths from the press and enthusiastic response from the jazz record-buying community. World-class Ron Carter, Jacky Terrasson and Ravi Coltrane join Cindy here making her first HighNote release a true all-star outing. Covering tunes by Ornette Coleman, Lenny Kravitz and Wayne Shorter, the band also joins Cindy on a few of her own imaginative compositions.
Cindy Blackman
Active Decades: '80s, '90s and '00s Born: Nov 18, 1959 in Yellow Springs, OH Genre: Jazz Styles: Hard Bop
An accomplished, yet not flamboyant or showy drummer, Cindy Blackman has become a well-respected drummer and occasional bandleader in a short time. Both her mother and grandmother were classical musicians and her uncle a vibist. Blackman began playing drums as a child and studied classical percussion at the University of Hartford and Berklee. Alan Dawson and Lennie Nelson were two of her instructors. Blackman moved to New York in the early '80s, and played with Freddie Hubbard and Sam Rivers. She became Jackie McLean's regular drummer in 1987, and began recording as a leader that year for Muse. Blackman was a big attraction at jam sessions organized at the Blue Note by Ted Curson, and played with Don Pullen's trio in 1990 at several festivals. She has a few sessions available on CD. ---Ron Wynn, All Music Guide |
