The title refers to the "Big Fracture" that occurred between the Western world and the Islamic world on September 11, 2001; but it also refers to all those experiences that in some way, "fracture" your path forward, taking you in directions that perhaps you would never have imagined traveling. I feel particularly attached to the compositions on this recording because they all refer to real events that happened between June and October, 2001. I remember having an irrepressible urge to fix those events on music paper, as it were, and to arrange them for a group of musicians (at the time, the group existed only in my imagination, though I could hear the music clearly), even if during that same period I was getting ready to record other pieces for my debut recording "Music for Five".

I still remember that period of my life: so full of emotions and music, events and experiences which were changing the course of my life. One of the events that touched me the most was the tragically premature death of my friend and orchestra colleague - the oboist Luca Figaroli - in a car accident. I remember that just a day before he died, I had returned from Paris where I played at the Villette jazz Festival with the European Big Band under the direction of David Murray. I saw Luca, and we talked about this new experience of mine; what struck me was the way he was listening to me talk. Then he said, "Johnny, you really enjoy yourself when you play. I can see it in your eyes, you love what you're doing. As soon as you play another jazz gig, Invite me: I would love to hear same of your jazz playing". That was the last lime I saw him: he died in a car crash the next day. This was a real tragedy. The orchestra we were playing in was performing Verdi's "Requiem" under the direction of Riccardo Chailly: the last concert we did was dedicated to the memory of Luca.

In these cases, it is clear that whatever you say will sound banal with respect to the seriousness of the event. Having said that, I would like to attempt an homage to a friend with my "Requiem for Luca", and attempt to remember him as he always was for me: solar, generous, open, always willing to listen and to help. Who knows if Luca, wherever he may be now, will be able to continue listening to the music that was a constant traveling companion for him in his brief life.
At the end of the day, I believe that life always takes you in the direction that has been assigned to you, whether you know it or not. Strange but true.
