Jazz
This project grew out of a lucky meeting, in Paris in January 2006, with extraordinarily sensitive and spontaneous musicians. For a long time I had wanted to make a record the way they used to in the '50s and '60s: meet musicians in the studio, give a bare outline of the structure of the pieces, make a short run through the music and then ... "roll the tape". For this recording I had promised myself that we would do just one take for every piece, and that's exactly what happened. After a couple of days I went back and listened to the recordings. What struck me was the fluidity of the music, and how that fluidity seemed to grow, piece after piece. It was then that I started to think that this was more than just a simple session. I like to think that anything can happen when playing music - especially jazz, in which the creative contributions of all the players, and the "magic of the moment" are essential. Giovanni and Flavio Bonandrini at Soul Note knew that I had wanted to make a different kind of recording and they accepted the session with enthusiasm. Once the recording was done I wanted to share it with a musician I truly respect - Enrico Rava. Enrico listened to the music and sent me a letter that, for its spontaneity and purity, made me extremely happy and profoundly moved me.

I have just finished listening to your record and it is really easy for me to tell what I think. Really easy because I can sum it up in one simple adjective: EXTRAORDINARY. I haven't heard anything this good in a long time. As a trumpeter and composer you are able to give life to a world that echoes the past - from Mingus to Ellington, and contains embryos of the future, though in the end it is really your world. There is pure beauty, a taste for risk, avant-garde experimentation, and tenderness; all blended with extreme naturalness in something that could be called the sound of your soul. This is a record that will hold a place of honor among my favorites, together with the recordings of the great jazz players and composers.
