One of the mixed blessings of being an in-demand sideman is struggling to carve out enough time to pursue solo projects. Since breaking out in the smooth jazz world after a lengthy sideman career (Deborah Gibson, Freddie Jackson, Angela Bofill) with 2000's Foreward, which earned him a Best New Artist nomination from the National Smooth Jazz Awards, Jaared has only had one other release (Hangtime) while being most familiar to genre fans as guitarist Peter White's right-hand man; his other major genre credit was as a featured performer on Maximum Grooves' Grammy-nominated Coast to Coast. Addiction, his debut on Trippin N Rhythm, was another shot at establishing him more as his own artist, and the spirited grooving and catchy melodies throughout will definitely inspire, well, addictions from genre listeners looking for sounds that are fresh and cool. Jaared is not reinventing the wheel, but he keeps them spinning joyfully from the get-go on the disco-fied, hard-thumping alto tune "Piccadilly Circus," which features a chorus pairing his edgy horn sound with Norman Brown-like vocalizations. Adding his voice elsewhere -- as on the jumpy soprano gem "That's Alright" and especially "You Like Me Don't You," on which he sings a lovely, soulful lead vocal -- helps this collection stand out from the sax pack. His other trademark vibe is a keen ability to texture horns in all the right spots, and he's aces as a collaborator, writing and playing with labelmate and keyboardist Oli Silk and with the lush guitar of genre star Steve Oliver on the sensuous, easily rhythmic soprano ballad "Jamaican Winds." Jaared's picture-perfect blend of groove, melody, edge, and exotica makes this disc one of 2008's best smoothies. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

Jaared

Born: Jaared Arosemena, Washington, DC on January 20, 1967
Active Decade: '00s
Genre: Jazz
Styles: Contemporary Jazz, Smooth Jazz

Heavily influenced by David Sanborn, instrumentalist Jaared is a Washington, DC-based alto and soprano saxophonist who has made smooth jazz and crossover jazz his primary focus in the ‘90s and 2000s; other saxophonists (alto, tenor, soprano or otherwise) who have had a direct or indirect impact on Jaared's playing include Grover Washington, Jr., Nelson Rangell, Ronnie Laws and George Howard. Jaared is capable of playing other types of instrumental music, including fusion, soul-jazz and post-bop--and he is no stranger to R&B. But slick, polished, easygoing smooth jazz is the style that he is best known for, especially in jazz circles.
Jaared was born Jaared Arosemena in Washington, DC on January 20, 1967, although he grew up in Bedford, VA. That was where Jaared began studying the saxophone at the age of seven. Jaared, who suffered from childhood asthma, took up the sax at the recommendation of his doctor. Playing a wind instrument might seem like the last thing that an asthmatic would want to do, but in fact, Jaared's doctor urged him to do exactly that in order to strengthen his lungs. The DC native was still a pre-adolescent when he first heard the popular Sanborn, who became his primary influence. There were many other sax players he listened to growing up, and they ranged from Grover Washington, Jr., Boots Randolph and Ace Cannon to the Lester Young-minded tenor man Stan Getz. But Sanborn's alto affected him more than anything, and that strong Sanborn influence remained after Jaared reached adulthood in the mid-‘80s and became active on the Washington, DC music scene (where he has played with artists ranging from go-go funk band EU's Ju Ju House to Mary Ann Redmond, an excellent soul/rock singer along the lines of Tina Turner and Etta James). Although Jaared has had his share of R&B gigs, the East Coast musician chose to concentrate on smooth jazz when he began recording albums of his own in the early 2000s (a time that also found him touring the United States extensively as a sideman and featured soloist for smooth jazz guitarist Peter White). Foreward, Jaared's debut album, was released on LightyearMarimelj (which is distributed by Warner Bros.) in 2001; that album was followed by his sophomore outing, Hangtime (also on LightyearMarimelj) in 2002.
