2009 collection of digitally remastered recordings from the Jazz guitarist. This CD contains Pass's first solo recordings after his release from Synanon (the controversial drink and drug center). He was asked by Richard Bach, owner of Pacific Jazz Records, to make these recordings in 1963.
Joe Pass' first session as a leader finds the 34-year-old guitarist already playing in a fairly recognizable, boppish style. Pass, who had somehow survived his drug addiction of the 1950s, is well featured in a quartet with pianist Clare Fischer (who doubles on organ), Albert Stinson or Ralph Pena on bass and Colin Bailey or Larry Bunker on drums. This 1980 reissue (unfortunately not yet reissued on CD) is called "complete" because the original eight selections are joined by an alternate take of the original and a version of "Days of Wine and Roses." Excellent bop that largely launched Joe Pass' career, although fame was a decade away. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide |
