His Best Recordings: 1946-1949 is part of the Best in Jazz series that highlights jazz musicians' finest material as chosen by a panel of jazz experts. So here we have 22 of Fats Navarro's best performances, from his work with Andy Kirk to his solo efforts to his days in Tadd Dameron's orchestra. The album is compiled superbly, the songs that were chosen show a wide variety of what Navarro was capable of. With so many songs available, there will be those who may be disappointed by what makes it and what does not. But the material that is here definitely puts a bright spotlight on Navarro's quick fingers and charismatic phrasing. "Goin' to Minton's" features an excellent solo that absolutely brims with energy, while "Nostalgia" shows a reserved Navarro displaying his keen ear for melody. This is a great collection from an artist that has never been one of the more well known performers in the genre, anyone interested in some quality bop era jazz should give this a try. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide |
