One of Charlie Parker's most acclaimed live recordings compiled in its entirety on one set for the first time ever. This CD contains the complete "Bird at St. Nick's" album plus all of the additional material taped that same evening and previously issued separately on a long out of print set. As a bonus, it is added another rare private recording by Bird, including Sarah Vaughan as guest vocalist on "This is Always", which is particularly interesting in that it is Bird's only live version of this tune, and his only recording of it apart from the Dial studio takes with Earl Coleman's vocals.

The St. Nick's date was privately recorded by tenor saxophonist Don Lanphere with the collaboration of trombonist Jimmy Knepper (who was best known for his multiple collaborations with Charles Mingus and for being knocked out by Mingus during a dispute, Knepper also wrote the original liner notes for the first issue of St. Nicks).

Bird was relaxed on these recordings. His talent and invention transcends the obvious limitations of the recording quality.

"Veteran Charlie Parker collectors generally know that they should avoid all but his most famous live sessions. It is not that Parker plays badly on this CD reissue (in fact his solo on "Confirmation" is quite miraculous) [...] Bird (with trumpeter Red Rodney, pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes) plays quite well."
