This one of Bird's most passionate live performances in its entirety, with the man in great form being the only horn featured throughout. It also includes Parker's only recorded versions of tunes like "Sly Mongoose" and "Gold Rush". This concert, recorded at The Rockland Palace was specially organized in honour and support of Benjamin J. Davis, an official of both the American communist party and The Daily Worker. who was sentenced to a 5 year jail sentence in 1949, for 'political subversion'. Davis, a campaigner against segregation and racial discrimination, was a Harlem hero. As a bonus, there are three rare Birdland broadcasts, including collaborations with pianist Kenny Drew. Full details in the 12-page booklet.
This two CD set contains the complete celebrated Rockland Palace performance, probably recorded by Bird's wife Chan with Bird's own tape recorder. Among its many highlights is the fact that Parker is the only horn featured throughout (and he is in wonderful form!), and that it presents Parker's only recorded versions of tunes like 'Sly Mongoose' and 'Gold Rush'. As a bonus, we present three rare Birdland broadcasts, including the only existing collaborations of the saxophonist with pianist Kenny Drew. |
